Monmouth College to discuss ‘The Rise of ISIS’ next Wednesday

As part of this year’s Great Decisions program, Monmouth College will be discussing and showing materials on “The Rise of ISIS” next Wednesday.

The program starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Moot Board Room of the Center for Science and Business and is free to the public.

Mohsin Masood is associate dean of students at Monmouth College and will be co-hosting the program.

He tells WGIL the upcoming presentation is significant not only because the Islamic State group is frequently in the news, but also because the terrorist organization is entirely unique.

“ISIS is a new phenomenon and it’s a very strange phenomenon in the Middle East as opposed to what al Qaeda was,” Massood says. “It came up in absolutely no time with very fast development in that part of the world–mainly Syria and Iraq and it is also spreading to some other countries in the world.”

Great Decisions is a national program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. A Great Decisions 2016 companion guide, which includes eight chapters of reading, is also available.

Presentations are held on different topics each week through mid-March and cover topics such as “The future of Kurdistan,” “The Koreas” and “Climate Change.”
