New Hy-Vee Gas station to offer E85 fuel next week

When the new Hy-Vee Gas station opens Tuesday on Henderson Street, the 10-pump station will be the first in the Galesburg area to offer E85 fuel.

In a news release, Jim Purlee of Purlee Farms says the inclusion of E85 fuel is a “win-win situation for Hy-Vee and for Knox County agriculture.”

E85 is a corn-based blend of ethanol and gasoline.  The inclusion of the ag-derived fuel came about through a collaboration between Hy-Vee, Big River Resources, the Illinois Corn Growers Association, Growth Energy and the American Lung Association along with help from Purlee, who is described as “instrumental” in the process.

Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development President Ken Springer says the next closest E85 fueling station is in Williamsfield.

When the new Hy-Vee Gas station opens next week, it will bring with it three full-time jobs as well as 10 part-time positions.

The convenience store and fueling station opens for business at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
