County starting year with a deficit

Three payroll disbursements in December and a never ending state budget impasse have the Knox County Finance Committee wobbling into 2016.

Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis reported to the committee last night that the general fund is running at a deficit of about $118,000.

That would be helped if the county can recover $164,000 owed by the state for three position salaries.

Illinois pays 66.6% of the State’s Attorney and Public Defenders salaries and 50% of the Supervisor of Assessments’.

State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer filed a lawsuit two days ago against the state in an attempt to recover more than $45,000.

Davis also reported that the nursing home fund is $88,000 in the hole with a outstanding payment by the state still being waited on.

The highway fund is $19,000 behind.but is being aided now by motor fuel tax money that is now trickling in although the amount of those payments has been declining, a trend Finance Chair Greg “Chops” Bacon thinks will continue.

The health insurance fund has $2.6 million but due to a resolution passed last year 12% of that will go into the general fund.
