Police arrest New York man with 27 pounds of pot

Officers arrested a New York man yesterday after the 43-year-old suspect believed to be holding more than 27 pounds of pot broke a window out of an Amtrak train and fled from Galeburg drug interdiction police.

Rashawn Richardson appeared today via video in Knox County Circuit Court on counts criminal damage to property, cannabis trafficking and other pot charges.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops told the court police had approached Richardson in his room on an Amtrak train stopped at the Galesburg depot.

When asked about his luggage, Richardson told officers he had bags elsewhere on the train and led police away from his room.

He then fled into another sleeper car, broke a window out and ran from the scene. Officers found Richardson hiding in a vehicle on Main Street.

After receiving a search warrant, police found more than 12,300 grams of pot in two suitcases that were in Richardson’s possession.

Judge Stephen Mathers set the drug suspect’s bond at $250,000 and appointed a public defender to the case.

Rihardson’s next court date is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday.
