District 205 to vote on cuts tonight

$3.2 million in cuts could come tonight in District 205. Board members will reconvene to take a vote on cutting 75 positions in the district.

The vote comes on the heels of last weeks proposals by Superintendent Ralph Grimm, who says cuts are necessary to make the district “economically viable.”

If proposals pass, 29 teachers and five administrators would be removed alongside the consolidation of GHS North which would move into Galesburg High School.

GHS Principal Roy Van Meter is also expected to resign alongside cuts. Last week, Grimm cited that enrollment has declined 7% over the past ten years while staffing levels have increased 16%.

GEA President Dave Sharp has voiced the union’s need for time to analyze cuts, however, there has been cooperation with the school board. Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the district office on Harrison Street.
