ALERT: Winter weather brings wrecks throughout county

Roads are dotted with vehicles in ditches, especially along Interstate 74. Police say mile markers 41 to 54 have seen numerous motorist assist calls due to slick conditions.

Wintry weather hit the area full force around 1 p.m. today leading to about 50 reports of motorists in ditches or in wrecks that resulted in everything from cosmetic vehicle damage to injuries.

And that was all before 3:45 p.m.

Based on 911 dispatch records, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department responded to nine reports of accidents with possible injuries and five without injuries, mostly on Interstate 74. Galesburg police saw three wrecks with possible injuries and 10 without, all in the two and a half hours after inclement weather it.galesburgpolicelogo-150x150

Seven motorist assist calls came into the city and another 15 calls came into the county.

Police say massive upticks in wrecks are common when the first bad weather of the season hits. Officers are prioritizing calls as they come in.

Motorists are urged to slow down and use extreme caution in slick conditions. And unless you absolutely have to go out, just stay at home.
