UPDATE: Crews battle Lombard Street blaze

A house fire is under control after Galesburg firefighters responded this morning to 872 Lombard St.

Fire Chaplain Glen Bocox says the house’s two residents were not injured. Neither was home at the time of the blaze, however, two dogs perished in the fire.

Battalion Chief Todd Peterson says white smoke was pouring from windows and walls in the one-and-a-half story house when crews arrived at about 9:20 a.m.

Flames were visible in the kitchen located on the building’s west side.

A water main broke after firefighters attached a hose to the hydrant in front of the burning building, causing some flooding in the area. The Galesburg Water Department responded to the scene to keep flooding under control while fire crews tapped into the water.

No cause has been determined at this time. The house sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

A portion of Lombard and Skinner streets was closed during the blaze. Crews began to leave the area at about 11 a.m.

The American Red Cross is assisting the home’s two adult residents.

The Galesburg Fire Department, Galesburg Police Department, Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service and Ameren were all on the scene in addition the Water Department.
