Nancy was nominated by Huong Hua, who is a fellow teacher, and has a daughter in Mrs Sandall’s class. Here’s what Huong had to say about Nancy Sandall:

I believe that all kindergarten teachers should get the Big Red Apple Award. They are saints for teaching this grade level. This is a critical period in many children’s lives entering school for the first time and these teachers do wonders for them. However, since I have to hone in on one single individual person, I would like to recognize a special teacher at Silas. Her name is Mrs. Nancy Sandall and this is her last year teaching in the district.

Mrs. Sandall is my daughter’s kindergarten teacher this year. I am amazed at her ability to communicate with parents and children. She has a class of 25 kindergarteners: 17 boys and 8 girls. Some children in her class have never left their mother’s side. Going to school without mom for the first time is very scary and sometimes traumatic for these children. I have watched Mrs. Sandall do wonders with these little ones in the morning and after school. Once a child screamed and cried for his mother and Mrs. Sandall spoke softly with him. She was able to take his fears away. Another time, a child ran out of the school grounds and Mrs. Sandall went after him. By the time the bell rang, Mrs Sandall had gathered up the little adorable children and they all entered room without further incident. At the end of the day, Mrs. Sandall makes sure that all the children are picked up by their loved ones. By the end of the week, my child gets a Sandall Scoop newsletter to inform us as to what the child has learned the past week, what activities are coming up next, and who is responsible for snacks. What I’m most amazed about Mrs. Sandall with 25 first time schoolers is her ability to teach kids to learn. My daughter comes home and tells me what sound she’s learned during the day and the color of the week. By the fifth week of school, she’s able to spell six color words and a sleuth of letter sounds. We would go bike riding together and she would spell out a color she sees on the street. It gives me a new perspective on road signs and store signs.

All in all, I believe Mrs. Sandall should be the Big Red Apple award winner this month. As an educator and parent whose child enters school for the first time, I have watched with amazement at the magic exhilaration that Mrs. Sandall is able to bring to her students each and ever day.

As October’s Teacher of the Month, Nancy receives a $100 gift card from Toys & Teachers along with the Big Red Apple Award! Honoring teachers who make a difference with Lacky Monuments, Toys & Teachers, and Today’s Light Rock 105.3 KFM
