Memorial Day Parade

May 30, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Knox County VFW Post 2257 and the City of Galesburg have teamed up to announce the details of the 2016 Memorial Day Parade to be held in downtown Galesburg on Monday, May 30th. This year’s event will have a different set-up and starting point from previous downtown parades.
Due to congestion and accessibility issues on Chambers Street, as well as changes in traffic patterns resulting from the opening of the Bickerdyke Bridge, the parade starting point will move from Chambers and Main Streets to the 100 block of North Seminary Street. Parade organizers will form staging areas in the municipal and church parking lots east of Kellogg Street between Ferris and Water Streets. Participants can be dropped off by using the parking lot entrance off Kellogg Street that is immediately north of Full Viewpoint Park. Parade units, including vehicles and floats may use the next entrance to the north off Kellogg Street to check in with VFW organizers. Parade line-up will extend north on Seminary Street and include North Street east of Seminary if needed. Chambers Street will be open to regular traffic.
The parade will proceed south on Seminary to Main Street, turning right toward the Public Square. From there, it will travel the normal route west to Cherry Street where it will turn south. The parade will end at its usual spot at Cherry and Tompkins Street near the Knox County Courthouse.
There will be a brief ceremony at the Courthouse immediately after the parade. The names of the deceased veterans from May 1st to April 30th of this year will be read followed by the laying of wreaths and a 21 gun salute with taps.
Individuals or groups wishing to participate in this year’s parade need to register with the VFW at 309/342-1181 by May 27th. The Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. Participants are encouraged to report to the Parade Check in by 9:30 a.m. The Memorial Day Parade Marshal is Mr. Bob Spears.
This will be a trial run of the new form-up area which, if successful, will be used for all future downtown parades. City staff and the VFW organizers hope that citizens will be patient in working out potential problems that may arise with this change and appreciate the cooperation of businesses and residents in the area that may be temporarily affected by the new parade route.
Memorial Day has a rich history. It began shortly after the Civil War ended for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who had died. It was first observed on May 30, 1868. The Memorial Day Parade pays tribute to the fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and freedom.
