Celtic Winter Solstice

December 21, 2018 @ 7:00 pm

$10

Friday, December 21st, Prairie Folklore Theatre celebrates its twentieth anniversary by bringing its show to The Bishop Hill Creative Commons. Brian “Fox” Ellis, artistic director and co-founder said, “It was twenty years ago on the Winter Solstice that Barry Cloyd and I gave our first performance of this show. It sold out three performances its first night and continues to sell out almost every year since!”

The Celtic Solstice is a modern re-enactment of an ancient tradition. On the longest night the Celtic people gather to celebrate our cultural heritage and our relationships within the cycles of nature. Legends of the old kings and the fairie realm, songs of love lost and won, poetry and dance blend in this celebration of the winter season! This performance is a weaving of original songs and poetry with thousand year old tales and tunes.

Looking back over the years, Fox waxes nostalgic, “Barry and I have written and produced more than 20 different shows that celebrate our local history and our region’s roles on an international stage. We have produced a documentary and four CDs. We have performed all across the Midwest, from Bismarck, North Dakota to Marquette, Michigan. We have orchestrated tours at dozens of historic theaters across Illinois. We have hosted a revival of the Chautauqua Movement, including Bishop Hill’s annual event. But it is this performance of the Celtic Winter Solstice that is still our favorite. This show started it all 20 years ago!” Five years ago PFT moved its headquarters to Bishop Hill and last spring they helped to purchase the Village Smithy Quilt Shop with John Taylor to create a new performance venue in Bishop Hill, The Commons. Fox added, “this show is a great experience to share with out of town guests to give them a real taste of our shared Midwestern culture.”

The Bishop Hill Creative Commons will open at 6:00 and the show begins at 7:00. Suggested donation is $10. Folks are encouraged to come for the day to visit museums and get in a little last minute shopping, or to have dinner next door at The Filling Station. Call for reservations since seating is limited.
