West Central Community Service Inc. has received a federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced the $2.5 million grant on Monday, August 19th. Bustos is a member of the House Appropriations Committee that oversees the Department of Health and Human Services. In a statement, Bustos said, “I’m pleased to announce these federal funds for West Central Community Services in Knox, Warren and Henderson Counties and I’ll continue to fight for a lifetime of opportunity for all of our children.” West Central Community Services Inc.’s federally funded preschool program – Head Start – provides children aged 3 to 5 with a center-based school readiness program. The organization provides a home-based readiness program – Early Head Start – from birth to age 3. In addition to early childhood development and school readiness, the organization also offers health and nutrition services and mental health and disabilities services. Executive Director Mary Reed said, “I thank Congresswoman Bustos for being an advocate for early childhood education and a leader on this issue.” She continued, “Head Start programs provide essential services to members of our community and these federal dollars will help us prepare children for the future.”
