Stay safe around fireworks this 4th of July

On the eve of our nation’s Independence Day, keep in mind: there are no kinds of fireworks that are legal in Illinois. The only “fireworks” that are legal – aren’t actually fireworks – and even some of those are outlawed locally. “Those are sparklers, snake or glow worms, smoke bombs, noisemakers – those are legal to those in the City of Galesburg. “Galesburg Fire Marshal Randy Hovind said. “In 2001, that’s when we made (sparklers illegal). Things like fountains, comets, anything like firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, anything that’s handheld – those are illegal in the state. So you can’t have those at all.” The Pyrotechnic Use Act in Illinois bans the sale, possession, and use of all “consumer fireworks.” Violating the law can result in up to 1 year in prison and a $2,500 fine. But when lighting even the novelty fireworks keep some safety tips in mind: do not allow children to handle fireworks, never consume drugs or alcohol when using fireworks, never hold a firework that is not meant to be held, light only one firework at a time, and never re-light a firework that does not go off.
