Now that most school’s have slowed down for the summer, the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum in Galesburg shows no signs of stopping. During the school year, Discovery Depot offers roughly 20 programs per month. During the summer, the Depot will be offering 16-17 “mini-camps” for school-aged children. All programs offered are hands-on, all have suggested age ranges, and the “camps” last anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours. “It’s just about the right amount of time to get the kids engaged and then they still have the rest of their day,” said Executive Director Denise Bradburn. “We do a lot of cooperative learning and group learning in the camps. They are doing problem-solving and higher-level critical thinking (programs). There are opportunities for parents also. If they want to stay, they can stay; if they want to drop them off, they’re able to do so.” Now having expanded in to the 2nd floor, the Depot has an all-new science classroom with a full slate of programs. Camps this year include robotics, dino discoveries, building, and engineering camp, myth-busters, unicorn camp, and Zoom and Vroom. Most three-day camps cost between $35 and $40. Bradburn says an annual membership for 6 people is $105 which includes lower prices for camps, programs and merchandise – and unlimited admission.
