Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 11th

The largest food drive in the nation is Saturday, May 11th. The 27th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is held in more than 10,000 cities across the nation. The drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food for the past 25 years. Galesburg has been a part of the drive since the beginning, and it will benefit the FISH Food Pantry. “We are very busy at FISH,” said Diane Copeland. “On a daily basis, we serve probably 25-30 families. Sometimes it’s 40, sometimes it’s 15 (families). Over the course of the year though, we average between 14,000 to 15,000 individuals – that is a duplicated number. Sometimes they come once a year, sometimes it’s multiple times. Once every 30 days they can come. It’s about 6,000 families we serve.” To donate, residents can place a box or grocery bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail this Saturday. USPS employees will have extra help Saturday bringing donations to FISH. You can also drop off donations at the post office at either the front window or the back loading dock.
