Cottage Hospital to suspend labor, delivery, urology operations

Expectant mothers will have to go somewhere other than Galesburg Cottage Hospital to have their babies starting May second.

That’s because the hospital says they will be suspending inpatient labor and delivery operations, along with urology services, on that date.

In a news release, hospital CEO Jim Flynn says there are several reasons for the suspension. For one, he says with fewer than 860 deliveries in the whole area last year, the demand just isn’t there to have two obstetrics programs in the area.  For another, Flynn says there has been “a significant loss of funding as a result of the state’s redesigned Hospital Assessment Program,” and that led to a decline in Medicaid Supplemental payments.  Flynn says that alone led to a loss of $5 million in revenue.

Cottage says the closure includes the termination of OB services at the Cottage Women’s Health Clinic, and that the Cottage Urology Clinic will stop scheduling appointments.

In both cases, the hospital says they’ll work with OSF Saint Mary Medical Center and other area providers to get patients set up at those locations.

Cottage says inpatient and outpatient gynecological services, however, will continue.

There’s no word on how many employees will lose their jobs because of the suspension.
