Hammond responds to Wallet-Hub tax report

Illinois ranks as having the worst tax rate, according to from financial website WalletHub.

The website’s recent survey looked at the 2019 tax rates of all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and found that Illinois’ rate was over 38-percent higher than the national average of 10.76-percent.

Assistant House Minority Leader and Macomb Republican Norine Hammond says that the report is proof that Illinois really is unfriendly to taxpayers.

“I think, finally, the reports are getting out. You hear people say, ‘well Illinois really isn’t the highest taxing state,’ but this report, I think, lays it out clearly that, in fact, we are.” Hammond said. “It’s not just an income tax or a property tax, it is all taxes. And, when you take all taxes into consideration, Illinois is 51st.”

Illinois’ effective total state and local tax rate on median U.S. households is 14.9-percent, nearly half a percent higher than Connecticut. The report assumes that the annual income comes it at around $58,000 with a home value of $193,000.

The adjusted overall rank, based on cost of living index, ranks Illinois at 49th.
