Bank robbery suspect makes court appearance

Iretha Belton

Two Peoria residents stand accused of having roles in Wednesday morning’s robbery of a downtown Galesburg bank.

45-year-old Iretha Belton has made her first appearance in Knox County Circuit Court on felony charges of Armed Robbery Accountability, Aggravated Robbery Accountability, Robbery Accountability, and theft.

Dante Williams

Belton, Knox County prosecutors say, was the driver of the vehicle the two came to town in, and while that the car had problems and ended up being left at the East Main Circle K, she and 47-year-old Dante Williams still got away with several thousand dollars in cash from First Mid Bank and Trust that was put in Belton’s purse. The two were picked up about a half hour after the robbery at the Hardee’s on East Main — Williams allegedly still wearing some of the clothing he used in the robbery.

A judge set bond at $500,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for March 18th, but prosecutors say Belton could end up being transferred to federal custody. Williams already is, and reportedly will be in court on federal robbery charges. He allegedly robbed a Peoria bank more than a decade ago and could have his parole revoked because of the new robbery.
