Knox County Nursing Home evaluation presented to committee, animal control-related ordinance presented

The Knox County Building Committee was given a list of projects that will need to be done at the Nursing Home at last night’s meeting.

Cody Basham with Klingner and Associates presented an evaluation of the facility to the committee and gave a rundown on several items throughout the property.

Basham’s packet was extensive and it included things such as lighting replacement to more energy efficient lamps, replacement of doors, renovation work to several wings, and replacing tiles that may contain asbestos.

Items on Basham’s immediate radar included some work to the roof, as well as some structural work for a condensing unit.

Members of the Knox County Board are also looking to pursue an ordinance similar to one that the City of Galesburg has on the books, following an incident in Abingdon where a dog was taken from an owner after being chained up outdoors during harsh winter weather.

Galesburg’s law forbids pet owners from chaining up an animal outdoors for more than six hours in a 24 hour time period. Freshmen board member Patrick Harlan said that pets should be treated humanely.

The ordinance would allow Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies to take animals that are being neglected to the humane society. Sheriff David Clague suggested that the county looks at getting a facility to help house dogs that would be taken.
