County Board being asked to stop dissolution of rural ambulance service

Supporters of the Altona-Oneida-Wataga Ambulance Service came before the Knox County Board last night to submit a petition of signatures from residents in an effort to stop the dissolution of the emergency service.

In October, The Oneida-Wataga Fire Protection District Trustees voted to end the contract with AOW as of April 30th, and instead hire a full-time paramedic for the district. That plan appears to be on hold as of now.

Several supporters spoke during the meeting, including local attorney Dan Alcorn, who was retained by Oneida residence Mike and Candi Kalp.

Alcorn said the petition of 343 signatures shows support for the ambulance service and no confidence in three trustees.

“The people affected by this decision have lost confidence in certain members of the Oneida-Wataga Fire Protection District Board of Trustees,” Alcorn said the board. “As a result, they’ve lost confidence that these folks can provide for the emergency medical service needs of folks in these three communities.”

Alcorn added that the three individuals on the fire protection districts should be removed and replaced by the county board or not reappointed when their terms expire in April.
