Murder trial to begin in less than two weeks

The attorneys representing both sides in a murder case stemming from a shooting last Easter Sunday say they are ready for trial.

The prosecution and defense in the case of 29-year-old Jonathan Kelly made that indication to Judge Scott Shipplett Wednesday afternoon, at which point the judge said the trial would start with jury selection on February 19th.

Kelly faces murder and weapons charges as filed by a grand jury for the shooting death last April first of 26-year-old Jenni McGruder, described as an innocent bystander when Kelly allegedly opened fire outside the former Seminary Street Pub after a dispute inside the pub reportedly spread.

Shipplett says he will make sure the Circuit Clerk calls for an expanded jury pool, in the event there are many potential jurors who signal they can’t be fair an impartial to Kelly — this, following extensive media and social media attention.

Kelly remains held in the Knox County Jail after initially fleeing the state following the shooting.
