Galesburg City Workers wins $100,000 judgment against former HR manager

City of Galesburg employee Lisa Wilson was awarded a $100,000 judgment by a jury in District Court Friday against the City’s former human resource manager, David Jones.

Wilson filed a lawsuit against Wilson and the City in 2016, alleging that Jones in his capacity at HR manager required her to take a drug test solely because of her race.

Lisa Wilson is a black woman and David Jones is a white man.

The City itself was included in the original suit but Judge Sara Darrow dismissed the city’s involvement in the case.

The City agreed to pay for Jones defense as a part of a severance agreement when he resigned in 2017.

Legal bills the city has racked up on Jones behalf amount to at least $40,000 according to The Register-Mail but is expected to be more once all the final bills are in.

City Attorney Brad Nolden says per Jones separation agreement the city can’t be held liable for the judgment against Jones, although Wilson could seek attorney’s fees.

Nolden said at Monday’s City Council meeting that the trial included testimony from current and retired city staff.
