Galesburg and Parks and Rec Plan approved, grant for street reconstruction submitted

The Galesburg City Council officially has a master plan for Parks and Recreation after the final draft was approved by council Monday night.

Council member Angela Bastian asked the administration for assurance that the council could in good conscience approve the plan even if they didn’t agree with everything in it.

City Manager Todd Thompson says any new programs or expenditure of funds would have to be approved by Council vote, the plan is just an overarching policy guide.

Russell Fleming apparently didn’t buy that logic. He was the lone no vote, after he similarly had disagreements about approving the City’s Comprehensive plan, wanting to “receive” instead of approving it.

Aldermen also approved a resolution for the city to apply for grant funds from the state to cover the reconstruction of Monroe Street from North to Losey Street.

Galesburg is essentially applying for funds that were turned back over to the state when the Revolving Loan Fund program was ended.

The city will potentially get up to $845,000 for the project, freeing up local funds that were already budgeted.
