Bustos bringing Rock Island farmer as State of the Union guest

Each member of Congress is allowed to bring a guest to the State of the Union Address, which President Donald Trump will deliver Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

Often who members of Congress bring are indicative of their priorities. They try to make a statement with who they choose to invite.

Sen. Kamala Harris will bring an air traffic controller who missed paychecks during the government shutdown, Republican Rep. Chip Roy is bringing the National Border Patrol Council President.

17th Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is bringing 3rd generation farmer Tom Mueller, who operates in Edginton, a part of rural Rock Island County.

Bustos makes it clear in an email that by bringing Mueller she’s trying to convey that “farmers aren’t happy with Trump’s trade agenda.”

Prices for some agricultural products like soybeans dropped to 10-year lows last summer, which she blames on the president’s trade war.

Mueller is worried that some of Trump’s action may have lost some markets for the long-term.

WGIL will carry the State of the Union tonight at 8:00 p.m. following Illini basketball.
