One dead in Monmouth house fire

One person is dead after a residential fire in Monmouth.

At around 10:16 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to the 800-block of North 1st Street on a report of a structure fire to a residence.

During the initial page, fire department personnel received information indicating that one occupant was trapped inside the home.

Once on scene, firefighters found the fire on the first floor of the home had extended to the second floor and a family member at the scene confirmed that one person was still inside.

According to a release from Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat, firefighters performed a search and found one victim who suffered fatal injuries. Another occupant was taken to the hospital for burns suffered while attempting to rescue the trapped occupant.

The fire was brought under control quickly, but flames damaged the majority of the residence.

Fire Department personnel cleared the scene at 1:04 Saturday morning.

The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious and is currently under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Illinois State Police.

Assisting the Monmouth Fire Department was the Cameron and Kirkwood Fire Departments, Monmouth Police Department, and Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service.
