Sunday night ROWVA school threat deemed not credible

A threat made to the ROWVA school district prompted action from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, District #208 Superintendent Joe Sornberger was made aware of a threat to the students at the district via a social media post, which prompted him to reach out to law enforcement.

“I got a message from one of my teachers, who got a message from a student. A social media post from a student that was going to come into our school and try to cause harm to our students,” Sornberger tells WGIL. “So I was actually out driving roads when I got the call I was on Fremont – got the call, got the information. Called the Knox County Sheriff’s Department. I got together with them. They went out and talked to the student in question, and basically said ‘yeah we don’t think this is something that was going to happen.'”

He added, “but we checked it out, we were ready to go for school today. I didn’t have any worries. I will look into it more and get more information from the Knox County [Sheriff’s Department], but I feel pretty comfortable putting kids in school today knowing that they’ll be safe and sound at ROWVA.”

He said as soon as they had some information on the threat, they put out emails and made posts on social media to alert the parents.

ROWVA did not have school Monday due to the weather. The district also cancelled school for Tuesday and Wednesday.
