State’s Attorney makes another request for new prosecutor

The Knox County Finance Committee heard additional information regarding the State’s Attorney’s office request for another prosecutor.

State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer and Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops again came before the committee after doing so the month before.

In short, due to the high level of felony cases in the last year, the State’s Attorney’s office is in need of an additional prosecutor, as well as a replacement is needed for the compliance officer, which the new attorney would be responsible for.

Stroops told the committee that the new attorney would be responsible for the duties of the outgoing Compliance Officer Tyson Parks, and could be more effective with collecting.

Concerns were expressed by County Board Chair Pam Davidson about being able to pay for the attorney year after year but Pepmeyer insisted that if the money ran dry, the attorney would be let go. He said that no new taxpayer dollars would go to the salary of the new prosecutor.

Pepmeyer said that with the upcoming felony trials, the state’s attorney’s office had a lot of work on their plate.

The new chair of the Finance Committee, David Amor, told Pepmeyer that the county would do what they could to move the request forward to the full board.
