Slow start to Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

The Salvation Army typically depends on their Red Kettle Campaign to help fund services throughout the year. Recently, the campaign is more focused on the Holiday season. “The money we’re raising in the Red Kettle should help us year-round,” Salvation Army Captain Lisa Thorson said. “Unfortunately, the last two years we have not met our goal – so it’s really helped Christmas. For example,  when we give food to our 290 families, that cost alone is $13,000. The toys through the Angel Tree – when people pick an angel off of those trees and buys those presents, that’s what those children get.” The organization is need of volunteers still. Severe weather on November 25th caused the Red Kettle Campaign to be stalled for nearly two days. As of earlier this week, the Salvation Army only sat at 15% of it’s $100,000 goal. So whether it is buying gifts for the Angel Tree, making monetary donations, or donating time, the Salvation Army could use the volunteers. To volunteer or donate, visit the Salvation Army office at 510 North Kellogg Street in Galesburg or call 309-342-91-68.
