Lighting of tree tonight to commemorate World AIDS Day

An annual holiday tradition, with a somber but important tone to it, is held every year at the Knox County Health Clinic.

Marking World AIDS Day, which is Saturday, Dec. 1, a tree of red lights will be illuminated in a ceremony to bring HIV and AIDS awareness, as well as support those living with the virus.

The tree lighting for Worlds AIDS Day was once held in the Galesburg town square, but now it’s at the Health Department on Fremont Street.

The Health Department has an HIV Memorial Garden, open for the community to come and remember those with HIV, and that’s where the lighting is set to take place.

Erin Olson, Director of Wellness and Health Promotion with the Health Department says weather won’t stop the ceremony, which is planned for Friday at 4:30 p.m.

In the past on occasion, attendees have huddled in the building and enjoyed the lighting from a shelter.

“We’ve had anything from pouring down rain to way too much snow that we have had to light in the building,” Olson tells WGIL. “So either way, we will have a lighting that will happen… either inside or outside.”

Former State Rep. and Assistant State Ag Director Don Moffitt scheduled to say a few words beforehand.

“I talked to him a little bit and honor him. He’s been a very long time supporter of our group and we’re very appreciative of that. And then we’re hoping to have someone come down from FRIENDS in Peoria.”

Olson says there are many Knox County residents living with HIV, and it’s important to not forget or stigmatize them.

Discrimination and stigma are big deterrents for people to get tested for HIV, as well as access to confidential tests.

Tests are available at the Knox County Health Clinic, Mondays and Thursdays by appointment.

World AIDS Day has been marked since 1998 to show support and honor those living with HIV and AIDS.

The red lighted tree will stay shining for the entire holiday season.
