Galesburg hit with 11 inches of snow, northern Knox County gets more

It wasn’t a “snowpocalypse” but it was a devastating enough of a winter storm Sunday night to close nearly all non-essential functions in the community and leave hundreds stranded or without power.

The National Weather Service observed 11.5 inches of snow in parts of Galesburg Monday morning after a blizzard blew across Illinois Sunday night.

Believe it or not, Galesburg got out relatively easy compared with some neighboring communities.

Northern Knox County was blitzed with more severity than the southern portion, with NWS observing 13.2 inches in Altona and 13.4 inches in Rio.

Down in Knoxville totals were closer to 9 inches and a mere 7.5 inches in Monmouth.

Sunday’s storm was severe, leaving hundreds without power and emergency personnel responding to stranded motorists for a good portion of the evening.

However, Galesburg has seen worse. 2011’s blizzard, which some called “Snowpocalypse” or “Snowmageddon”, yielded 15 inches of snow, which the National Weather Service says is Galesburg’s single snowfall record.

Galesburg’s total is a record for one-day snowfall in November, which previously stood at 7.5 inches for Nov. 6, 1951.

On Sunday Winter Storm Bruce dropped heavy snow totals on towns spanning central Kansas to eastern Michigan with most of the heaviest totals seen in the stretch from Northeast Illinois to Southeast Iowa.
