Few more weeks of construction on Aline Shotts Bridge

The Farnham Street Bridge, or as its now known following a City Council vote, the Aline Shotts Bridge will open just a few weeks behind schedule. The original estimates when work started in May was to have it open to traffic by Thanksgiving but Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl says it looks more like the first week of December.

He says “cold has been the enemy” but he says they’re on track to start laying down asphalt this week and walls for the bridge still need to be poured.

“Little slower production and the contractor has to make provisions for the concrete for curing for cold weather, with the concrete coming out to the job and that kind of a thing. So, it’s a little more difficult and costly to pour concrete at this time of year but he’s making good progress and pouring the sidewalks on the bridge and one of the parapet walls is poured and he’s got three more,” Carl says.

The contractor, Sangamo Construction out of Springfield, also has to pour driveway aprons that go from the sidewalks in front of residences to the curb.

Back in 2017, before construction began, the Illinois Commerce Commission was expected to pay for about 60 percent of the $3.3 million project.

Another 15 percent was coming from the Federal Highway Administration with Galesburg paying the remaining $823,000 with funds from Motor Fuel Tax and 2015 GO bonds.
