Community Service Award winner named

One of the most visible employees of Knox College in Galesburg is being recognized for her efforts to help the city.

“Her tireless efforts to help bridge Galesburg and Knox College have brought common benefits to both,” says Galesburg City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz. “She has a rare combination of talents that help spell success for community projects and initiatives.”

Bennewitz, last year’s winner of the Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce’s Thomas B. Herring Community Service Award, presented this year’s award to Knox College Director of Government and Community Affairs, Karrie Heartlein, on Monday.

“Galesburg has been [my family’s] home for over 20 years,” says Heartlein. “We love it here. We’re so happy. We raised our children here. I’m really honored and pleased to be a part of the Galesburg community, to have a hand in making a difference and making this a better place for all of us.”

Among the areas listed as ways Heartlein is involved in the community:

  • Member of Galesburg Rotary Club
  • Participant in “Galesburg on Track:  A Heart & Soul Community”
  • Member of Galesburg Cottage Hospital Board of Directors
  • Helped with the “One State Together in the Arts” conference recently held in Galesburg
  • Participant in “Backpack Fridays” — the project of “Blessings in a Backpack”
  • Member of Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development
  • Serves on United Way of Knox County Board of Directors
  • Past chair of Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure”
  • Serves on Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
  • Member of Galesburg Public Art Commission
  • Member of PEO Sisterhood
  • Leader of Friends of Full Viewpoint Park
  • Administers Knox College’s “KnoxCorps” program
