City council hears plans for 2019 capital improvements

Galesburg Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl laid out highlights of planned capital projects for the city in 2019 last night at a work session with aldermen.Capital projects consist of things like roads, water, and city owned facilities.

Academy Street from Ferris to North Streets has been targeted for reconstruction, but since it is a Category 1 brick street it will be replaced as a brick street, complete with a water main replacement.

One brick street that won’t maintain its current style of surface is Monroe, from North to Losey, with Carl saying it will be reconstructed with concrete.

Speaking of resurfacing, due up in 2019 is downtown’s Parking Lot M.

“…which is where the Farmer’s Market is. We’ve sealed it numerous times but due to its condition it needs to be resurfaced and not sealed so we’re proposing that next year. It’s the parking lot right next to where Kohl’s Diamond Gallery is,” Carl says.

Planned for later in 2019 will be reconstruction of sidewalks on the east side of Cherry Street from Main to Simmons, in front of businesses like Coney Island and Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar.

Carl says it will be done later in the year because an overhaul of Park Plaza on the backside of those businesses is planned to start in the Spring and the city didn’t want to block the properties on both sides.
