Bridgeway ‘taking back’ unused medications on Saturday

Bridgeway is active in efforts to educate the community on the dangers of taking prescription medications that haven’t been prescribed to you.

Jovanie Wallace is one of their staff that goes to local schools to teach drug and alcohol prevention programs.

But she says its important to make sure there aren’t any unused prescriptions in your home that might tempt kids or adults alike to abuse or misuse certain drugs.

Bridgeway is inviting anyone to bring unused prescriptions to their Drug Takeback event, at the final Galesburg Farmer’s Market on the season, scheduled for Saturday.

Director of Outpatient and Support Services with Bridgeway Vicki Rose tells WGIL their efforts coincide with the National Prescription Drug Takeback Day, which shines a light on how important it is to get rid of unused medications

“Because we know that young people who use medications inappropriately tend to get them either from their own medicine cabinet, a neighbor’s house, a friend’s house, grandma’s house – somewhere like that,” Rose said. “So we want to get as many of those disposed of in a proper way as possible.”

It’s not an uncommon phenomenon that a person is prescribed medication and they don’t take it all, which leaves potentially dangerous drugs within reach of children, or adults that risk addiction or adverse effects.

Look for the Bridgeway table at the Galesburg Farmer’s Market this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
