Two teenagers significantly burned in accident

Two 15-year-old female juveniles were transported to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield with significant burns following an incident overnight Friday.

According to a police report, Galesburg officers were dispatched to the 1500-block of Rock Island Avenue for a subject on fire.

The complainant told officers he had heard a loud bang and looked out to see a female on fire to run around and roll on the ground.

A fire pit with a fire burning was observed by police, as were several pieces of burnt clothing, and a can of paint thinner with burn marks and the indication that the bottom of the can had blown out.

Officers later responded to Cottage Hospital where two females with third-degree burns had been taken.

One of the girls told police they had been using paint thinner to fuel a bonfire.

When she tried to pour more on, the can of paint thinner exploded, causing significant burns to the other girl.

WGIL has reached out to St. John’s Hospital for an update on their condition but has not heard back.
