Galesburg Council approves bids for test hole and pavement repair

Galesburg Alderman last night approved a bid to repair pavement on Lombard Street for about $31,000.Gunther Construction was the winning bid to do the work just north of East Knox Street.

They also approved a test hole for the soon to be constructed gravel pack well #5 at the Oquawka Water Treatment Facility.

The test hole is part of the design process demands that the contractor drill a test hole.

Four bids were submitted with the lowest being approved at $22,000 with a 5-0 vote.

Galesburg City Council also gave the ok last night to pay into a subscription service that should help residents make public service requests.

The software will allow residents to submit service requests, for things like potholes, through their mobile phone, and the request will be sent to the appropriate city staff.

City Manager Todd Thompson says the amount for the subscription would be $6,900 and it would run until the end of 2019, after that it would be about $5,400.

Mayor John Pritchard tells WGIL that three council members requested that renaming the Farnham Street Bridge after long-time resident Aleine Shotts.

Pritchard told the petitioners spearheading the renaming that he would put it on an agenda for a vote if three aldermen asked for it.

Since aldermen have asked him to, he says its likely to be on first reading at the Council meeting on Nov. 5.

Also Alderman Peter Schwartzman said that in light on a U.N. report warning that the earth is on a catastrophic path if greenhouse gases are drastically reduced by 2030, he will present some ideas on what can be done on a local level.
