Local legislators update Chamber of Commerce on what to look for out of Springfield

Thursday, our four legislators that represent the Galesburg area in the General Assembly spoke before members of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce at their legislative luncheon. Rep. Dan Swanson says that as the fall veto session starts in November, he believes it will set the tone for how things will go with the next General Assembly.

“As I’m out visiting the county health departments and visiting our sheriffs,” explains Swanson, “mental health concerns keep coming up over and over again. So I believe that is something we are going to have to tackle.”

Rep. Norine Hammond saying she remains eternally optimistic and is encouraged that most legislators have a willingness to work together, even if that doesn’t hold true for all General Assembly members. Senator Jil Tracy made clear she does not support a “progessive income tax”, that some Democrats including gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker have put forth, saying although it’s sometimes referred to as a “fair tax” she doesn’t see it that way. She says it would require a re-opening of the Illinois constitution and she says once its opened, the tax can be changed every year. She says she just doesn’t trust the legislature with that kind of authority.
