Two individuals in Knox County Court on drug delivery charges

Two Galesburg men made video appearances in Knox County Court Friday afternoon on drug delivery charges related to an arrest early that morning.

38-year old Cory L. Richardson and 36-year-old Jake R. Brunt are facing a charge of Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis under 30-grams, a Class 4 Felony, and a misdemeanor charge of possession but without the intent to deliver.

In addition, Brunt is charged with a much more serious Class 1 Felony of Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine under 15-grams, and a Class 4 Felony of possession but without the intent to deliver.

Judge Raymond A. Cavanaugh set bail for both individuals and appointed the public defender’s office to represent them.

According to a Galesburg Police report, officers were making a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of West North street when Richardson and Brunt exited the rear of the vehicle, Richardson from the driver’s side and Brunt from the passenger’s side. Officers detected the odor of cannabis emanating from them and the rear of the vehicle.

Four baggies containing 16.6 grams of cannabis were allegedly found in the back seat. Neither man would claim ownership of the marijuana.

The front seat driver and passenger indicated that the cannabis found belonged to both men.

While the vehicle was being towed, officers also found 6.6 grams of a substance that would field test positive for cocaine was found near the rear passenger side wheel – thus leading the state to charge Brunt with the cocaine possession charges.

The state was recommending a bond of $5,000 for Richardson and $20,000 for Brunt. Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroop said that Brunt had a pending court case for cocaine delivery.

Judge Cavanaugh set bond for a lower bond for Richardson at $3,000; but would up the bond for Brunt to $40,000, saying that he “needs to come up with a new business.” Cavanaugh added that he was “tired of setting your bail for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.”

A preliminary hearing for Brunt was scheduled for October 29th, while Richardson will be back in court on November 19th.
