Second meth trial in less than a month for Galesburg man

Bond was set at $10,000 on Tuesday afternoon for a Galesburg man on methamphetamine possession charges, his second set of charges filed in less than a month.

44-year-old Danny J. Howerton made a video appearance in Knox County Circuit Court on Tuesday with Judge James Standard.

Howerton, who faces a Class 3 Felony of Possessing less than five grams of methamphetamine, had the public defender’s office appointed to represent him.

He was arrested around 3:21 that morning at Casey’s on West Main Street after officers observed him riding a bicycle with no front or rear lights. According to Galesburg Police reports, officers stopped him in the parking lot and observed him sweating and acting nervously.

As he was being approached he allegedly openly stated that he “had a quarter gram in my pocket.” Officers handcuffed him and searched him, to which they found a flower pencil bag which contained a small clear plastic baggie that contained suspected methamphetamine that would later field test positive for the substance.

He was described in the reports as being animated and very hyper, and would eventually be taken to Cottage Hospital at his request.

On September 10th, charges were filed in Knox County Circuit Court against Howerton which included meth possession under five grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond, in that case, was set at $5,000

He will be back in court on Friday for a bond rehearing, and then again on the 15th for preliminary hearings in both methamphetamine cases.
