Congresswoman Bustos announces bid for Assistant Democratic Leader

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos made an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday where she announced a bid for Assistant Democratic Leader if Democrats win the majority. Assistant Democratic Leader is the #4 post in Democratic House Leadership.

Bustos made the announcement to house colleagues earlier in the morning. She currently serves as a co-chair of the House Democratic Party and Communications Committee.

During her appearance, Bustos said she would focus on helping guide new and vulnerable members of Congress to achieve lasting success. She said she is committed to helping the entire caucus achieve bold, forward-thinking and lasting change. “The voice that I hope to bring to that leadership table as we move forward is it’s not enough that we just win back the Majority – yes we have to stay focused on – but we have to keep the Majority,” Bustos said. “That’s the kind of experience that I hope my colleagues would say I bring to the leadership table. Making sure that we are smart in the two years that lead up to 2020 and keep the Majority after that.” Bustos is the only midwesterner and the only Trump-District Democrat in elected Democratic Leadership. “I’ve focused probably 99.9% of my time making sure we DO win back the Majority because we have so much at stake,” She added. “I think what my colleagues saw when they were electing the co-chairs of the Policies and Communications Committee – I come from a Donald Trump District. There’s only 13 Democrats in all of the U.S. House of Representatives that come from a district that Donald Trump won. And I also won by 20 points.” Bustos won reelection in 2016 despite the district making an 18-point swing from President Obama in 2012 to Trump in 2016.
