This week is Rail Safety Week

For the 7th consecutive year, the Illinois State Police District 7 – which includes Knox County, is partnering with local, state, and federal agencies to promote vehicle and pedestrian safety around railroad tracks and trains. To promote awareness and to prevent injuries and fatalities, there are planned enforcement details throughout the week at various railroad grade crossings. Drivers and pedestrians who disobey the laws associated with crossing and railroad property will be cited. State Police Officers also plan to distribute literature to the public that contains rail safety information. District 7 Commander Captain Jason Dickey said in a press release: “Too many times motorists believe they have enough time or intentionally try to “beat” the train at rail grade crossings.” He said the dangerous and potentially deadly act is preventable and it’s not worth the risk. Last year, there were over 2,100 railroad crossing collisions involving motor vehicles nationwide – 270 resulted in fatalities. In Illinois there were over 100 railroad crossing collisions and 25 fatalities. Illinois ranked 2nd in the nation for grade crossing fatalities and 7th in the nation in trespassing fatalities. Dickey said to remember: stop, look, listen, live.
