Durbin supports FBI investigation into Kavanaugh allegations

Senator Dick Durbin is among those Democrats calling for the FBI to investigate the allegations of sexual assault being made against Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Speaking in Galebsurg Wednesday, Durbin tells WGIL it’s not like there isn’t precedent for such an investigation to take place.

“That, to me, is a credible request,” says Durbin. “We did exactly that 27 years ago with Anita Hill, when she complained about conduct with Clarence Thomas — now Supreme Court Justice. Immediately The White House turned that letter over to the FBI to investigate. This White House, and the Republicans in Congress, refuse to let the FBI investigate. It raises a question to me as to why they would do that.”

Durbin takes offense to suggestions that Democrats are playing politics with the nomination, and sat on a letter sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee by Doctor Christine Blasey Ford. Durbin tells WGIL ranking Senate Judiciary Committee member Dianne Feinstein received the letter from Doctor Christine Blasey Ford detailing accusations at the end of July, and that the Senate tried to investigate from the moment the letter was received, and prior to Ford’s identity being made public.

“[Feinstein] tried to pursue this matter for several weeks,” says Durbin, “even to the point of bringing in an outside investigator to take a look at whether it was credible, and she got nowhere. The Senate procedures just really don’t allow for that. That was when we got together last week — that the committee got together and said ‘turn over what you’ve got to the FBI.'”

Durbin says it’s important to not only be fair to Ford, but also to be fair to Kavanaugh.

Durbin spoke in Galesburg Wednesday.
