District #202 approves FY 19 budget

The Knoxville District 202 School Board approved the fiscal year 2019 budget at Monday night’s meeting.

In June, the board approved the amended fiscal year 2018 budget to a small surplus in what Superintendent Steve Wilder called the operational budget, distinguishing it differently from the overall budget because of payments being made for the working cash bond.

In the budget hearing prior to the monthly meeting, Wilder told board members that the budget he had brought forward in July was projecting a surplus of $182,720. Some things had changed between July and September; revenue had increased, and expenses did as well, and know the surplus had dropped to $171,597.

Wilder is expecting a deficit in the district’s building fund. But he said that he can live with a deficit as long as the overall budget is showing a surplus.

On the topic of buildings, Wilder also presented the board with an updated list of facility work projects.

Some of the summer projects completed included concrete pads at the finish line of the track, lighting in the parking lot of the district office, Mable Woolsey Elementary School office renovation.

The district also looked over enrollment numbers for the 2018-19 school year.

Wilder informed the bard that enrollment was at 1021 students, and 1075, when Prekindergarten was added in. He indicated that enrollment this year was up compared to last year.

It was noted in the meeting that there were concerns over the fluctuation of class sizes between the different grades. Several grade levels had less than 70 students in the elementary. Wilder indicated he was keeping an eye on the enrollment, and would look at moving teachers around to accommodate the larger class sizes as they progressed through the grades.

The board also discussed scheduling an informal town hall style meeting during an upcoming community dinner, but no dates were officially decided on.

The board did take action on an $80 donation for advertisement in the Christmas concert put on by Choral Dynamics.
