Monmouth College receives grant from Mellon Foundation

Monmouth College recently received a grant to help bolster the school’s liberal arts curriculum.

The Mellon Foundation – one of the largest foundations in the U.S. awarded the liberal arts college with a $200,000 grant – one of the largest humanities grants Monmouth has ever received. This comes after the school received $100,000 from the Mellon Foundation to improve first-year experiences for students.

Monmouth interim Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs Mark Willhardt said the grant will “allow us to examine the whole of our integrated studies curriculum to how it fits into our liberal arts ideals.” The grant will fund several initiative over the next three years – such as an outside review of the curriculum, faculty-development programs, and a communication plan so prospective students better understand the value of the liberal arts experience.

The four-course integrated studies program that all Monmouth students take includes an “Introduction to the Liberal Arts” class during the freshman year, followed by a course on “Global Perspectives” in the sophomore year, a “Reflections” course in the junior year and a “Citizenship” course in the senior year that serves as a capstone experience.

According to Willhardt, businesses seek to hire graduates who are strong critical thinkers, and can solve complex problems, which is why Monmouth developed its integrated studies program. He said the grant will ensure that our graduates continue to be be prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
