District 276 makes improvements as more lie ahead

Abingdon-Avon is now on their second week of school for the 2018-19 year.

As is the custom in the summer time, there were some improvements to District 276 facilities over the last few months.

The 6th grade wing at Abingdon-Avon Middle School underwent upgrades to put them in the 21st Century Classroom design that A-Town has become so well known for.

Put simply, these are classrooms which are highly student and technology centric.

Dr. Mike Curry is also embarking on his second year as superintendent.

There’s of course the excitement of new staff, new students and the Tornadoes first football game that was on Friday, but Curry’s also excited about expiring bond payments.

As some district bonds are now paid off, funds from sales tax will start flowing directly to the district, which will be good since Curry says two building roofs will need repairs next summer.

Over the summer the middle school’s 6th grade wing was updated to the 21 century classroom design, the student centered and technology based designs that A-Town has been implement for several years.

Also this year Abingdon-Avon High School has a new principal in Brad Weedman, after Shane Gordon as he has started as a superintendent in Bluford, Illinois.

He formerly was in the classroom at AAHS, and even once coached the girls basketball team.

Curry also says that they will keep their Pre-K progams the same as last year, although due to state funding cuts the programs will $70,000 in the red.
