Bond to stand for man accused of meth delivery and armed violence

Bond to stand at $500,000 for a Galesburg man facing several weapons and drugs charges

37-year-old Andrew C. Burns had his detention hearing on Thursday in Knox County Circuit Court with Judge Scott Shipplett.

Burns faces six felony weapons charges, the most severe being a Class X Armed Violence. He also faces possession of a stolen firearm, a Class 2 felony. Other weapons charges include three Class 2 Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and a Class 3 Felon in Possession of a Weapon.

He is also charged with Class 3 felonies of Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Meth with Intent to Deliver.

According to police reports, officers stopped Burns on August 9th in the 100-block of Pine Street for not adhering to the rules of the road while on a bicycle. He was seen riding the wrong way down the road and made a U-turn when officers approached him.

Burns allegedly had possession of a backpack and when officers stopped him he was observed removing it and throwing it to a woman on the nearby property, but she refused to take it.

Burns would not give consent for the backpack to be searched. A K-9 unit performed a free air sniff check and alerted to drugs in the backpack.

Reports indicate that Burns admitted to meth being in the bag, and to what he said was several thousand dollars in the bag that did not belong to him, however, he was let go at that time.

After a search warrant was obtained officers found $4,227 in cash, suspected crystal meth, scale, baggies, a bitcoin, police scanner, night vision goggles, a cell phone and two tablets, and a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber handgun with 19 live rounds.

Reports indicate that the firearm came back stolen.

An arrest warrant was issued on the 10th with a bond of $500,000.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Burns for August 10th.
