Galesburg teachers union could approve 2-year contract today

The Galesburg Education Association could approve a new two-year contract today.

Negotiations began in April, with 11 face to face meetings according to the board’s chief negotiator, Wayne Statham.

The final meeting was a marathon 12-hour session last Thursday that yielded a tentative agreement on the terms of a 2-year deal.

Statham credited the seemingly amicable negotiations to a “less adversarial approach” than he believed had been taken by some in the past.

“For the most part negotiations took place with all parties sitting at the table, face-to-face, making every effort to concentrate on what is best for District 205 students and the financial stability of our school district,” said Statham.

He says he thinks both sides have “built a lot of trust” for future negotiations.

The Galesburg Education Association is believed to be meeting at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon for a ratification vote.

If this contract is approved it came with considerably less labor pains than the deal making that took place four years ago.

In 2014 teachers went on strike for two weeks causing school days to be missed, before barely approving the contract by 52 percent.
