Galesburg toddler dies in apparent drowning

UPDATED  A two-year-old child was pronounced dead at Cottage Hospital after succumbing to the effects of drowning in what appears to be an accident.

Galesburg Police officers responded to a call of a child who was not breathing and possibly had been submerged in water at around 7:50 p.m. Sunday in the 600-block of Willard Street.

Officers were directed to an adjacent property where a man was observed attempting CPR on a water soaked child.

According to reports officers attempted chest compressions on the unresponsive child. GHAS arrived soon after and transported the child to Cottage.

Reports note that the 2-year-old — identified by Knox County Coroner Mark Thomas as Emmanuel Nsaku — had been reported missing 20 minutes before being discovered at the bottom of the pool.

Reports indicate that a rear gate connecting the properties had been propped open.

WGIL will have more on this story as it develops.
