After 31 years, Elizabeth Varner retires from Galesburg Parks and Rec Department

After a three-decade residency with the Galesburg Parks and Recreation Department, Recreation Supervisor Elizabeth Varner is calling it quits.

Varner says that summer camps were a passion of hers in her younger years, and after getting married she came to Galesburg in 1987 where she has been ever since.

She tells WGIL that the parks and rec department’s goal was to provide free or low-cost entertainment for the community.

“Almost weekly we have something free going on and if it’s not free it’s going to be low cost,” she says. “We’re recreational so we just mostly want to break even. We just want to offer things to the community and that’s been my passion, and it’s been my pleasure and my honor to be able to do that.”

Varner’s last day is Friday, but she still had plenty of fun activities for the kids of Galesburg in her last week.
