Alderman have rental licensing and housing on final reading again

Galesburg Alderman tonight could finally approve new minimum housing standards and a new rental licensing program after a few false starts.

The rental program will trade in registrations from licenses which can be revoked if landlords don’t keep rental units up to standards.

It also will ensure that every rental unit in the city is inspected by city staff or self inspection at least once every five years.

These ordinances are interrelated and were both tabled at the council meeting earlier in June because of two council members absences and was also tabled when alderman couldn’t reach an agreement in March.

Also on final reading tonight is to remove one Class A liquor license from the city registry.

It would be available in the event another business wanted to apply for the license.

Also council could approve three bids to demolish residential properties on N. Cedar St, S. Henderson St. and E. Brooks St.

Lockwood Excavating and Construction came in as the low bidder at a cost of $28,000 to take down the three dilapidated properties.

Another pair of road reconstructions should begin in with in a week, assuming that City Council approves the bids for reconstructing a portion of Berrien and Lombard Streets.

Berrien Street would be reconstructed from Henderson to Holton and and Lombard Street would be redone from Brooks to South.

Council documents says that for both projects the street base, curb and gutter will be removed and replaced with a full depth concrete pavement curb and gutter.

The combined price for both reconstructions is a little under $1 million.

These projects were budgeted for and will be paid for out of the 2016 GO Bond Capital Improvement Fund.
