Dairy month is more than just milk

June is Dairy Month. First celebrated back in 1937, the goal was to help farmers distribute a surplus of milk that was provided by grass-fed cows. Monica Nyman is a Nutrition Educator for the St. Louis District Dairy Council. She says consumers have questions about how their food is grown as well as farm practices. One of the programs offered by the council involves getting those questions answered.

“Every year we offer a fall farm tour to graduate students,” explains Nyman, “who are planning to become dietitians. It really just gives those students an eye opening experience and it educates them better so that they can take that information and pass it along to their consumers. Whenever your talking about diets you know dairy is an important role.”

She goes on to say that working with farmers and consumers to dispel any myths is an important part of the council. Showing how farms and processing plants operate adds another layer of transparency to the industry.
